Morkel to replace injured Kallis

Assured of a place in the ICC World T20 semifinals, South Africa will rest Jacques Kallis and field Morne Morkel.

Morkel will pplay in the dead rubber against India on Tuesday.

"Jacques has a niggle in the upper region of his back," explained South Africa captain Graeme Smith.

Kallis to be rested for Tuesday's game

"Jacques could have played on but we don't want to take risks and make sure he is ready for our semi-final whether it is on Thursday or Friday," he said.

"He is two players in one and we have decided to take the bowling option with his replacement.

Herschelle Gibbs will open the batting and this allows us to move all our batsmen one place up the order.

Team India skip practice session

Team India look in no mood to practice before the crucial Super 8 match against England in Twenty20 World Cup.

England knock champions India out of World Cup

London: England knocked defending champions India out of the ICC World Twenty20 2009 with a three-run victory in their second-round match at Lord's on Sunday.

India needed 19 off the last over to stay in the tournament but, despite a one-handed six by Yusuf Pathan over long-off, the task was too much and they finished on 150 for five.

The England victory silenced the large contingent of noisy Indian fans packed into Lord's and India failed to make the semi-finals after also losing their first Super Eight match against West Indies on Friday.

Off-spinner Graeme Swann captured the crucial wicket of Yuvraj Singh for 17, including two sixes, stumped neatly by James Foster.

Left-arm swing bowler Ryan Sidebottom, returning to the side in place of leg-spinner Adil Rashid, bowled the final over and was given the man-of-the-match award after capturing two for 31 from his four overs.

England lost Luke Wright for one in the second over after losing the toss and being asked to bat.

Ravi Bopara and Kevin Pietersen added 71 for the second wicket with Bopara hooking the first six of the match off Ishant Sharma.

Pietersen whipped Sharma through mid-wicket for four and moved down the pitch to left-arm paceman RP Singh as if he were playing a spinner to off-drive a four.

The introduction of Ravindra Jadeja's left-arm spin seemed to turn the match India's way. Jadeja bowled Bopara for 37 and dismissed Pietersen lbw for 46, trying to sweep a full delivery.

But five wides from Harbhajan Singh in the final over allowed to England to creep to 153 for seven, a defendable total on a pitch offering variable bounce.

'X factor' Malinga back in supernatural swing

Lasith Malinga is such an integral part of Sri Lanka's fast bowling arsenal that it needed the nation's president to intervene and ensure
he was fit for the World Twenty20s in England.

The bowler with the rare sling-arm action, whose toe-crushing yorkers have tested the world's finest batsmen, sat out the entire 2008 and early 2009 season with a career-threatening knee injury.

Malinga, 25, was unable to run or train, and the swollen bone in his right knee was so painful that he could barely climb stairs.

Worried the prodigious talent could be lost to the game, Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa recommended that Malinga should meet a spiritual healer Eliyantha White.

"He (White) works with supernatural powers and herbs," explained Malinga. "I don't know what he does or how he does it, but it works. I am very grateful to him and the president."

The treatment lasted five days and the pain disappeared. Malinga was fit to start his training. White later reportedly cured veteran Sanath Jayasuriya of a long-standing back problem.

Malinga marked his return to active cricket with a strong showing in the Indian Premier League in South Africa where he grabbed 18 wickets in 13 matches for the Mumbai Indians.

"He is fast and furious and never easy to get away," said an appreciative Mumbai coach Pravin Amre. "Sri Lanka will be very happy he is back."

Now that South Africa has won against WI

India's chances of making to Semi Finals even if they win against England and South Africa hinges on England's chances against West Indies. The loss against West Indies will come back to bite India if WI wins against England. If South Africa ends up with the best NRR even after losing against India they will be placed first obviously. From what I understand if WI and India are tied for points then it is West Indies that will go through because they have beaten India already.

At this point in time India has a NRR of -0.71, the least of all the teams in the group. England is on -0.67, Wst Indies is on -0.15 and South Africa on +0.90

I don't reckon South African can be walloped by a big margin that will pull their NRR massively. Similarly WI is expected to win against England (although WI have had wood over them this summer) by a decent margin. This will mean India will not only have to aim for a victory here but will also need to win with some decent margin otherwise despite winning the next two games they may still not make it to the next round.

Following is the batting of Indians while setting a target. As you can see India largely depends on Gambhir and Yuvraj. Others chip in. But not very consistent. I think it is time to rethink our strategy about setting targets.

SOS to Tendulkar-"get your pads on"

He is there watching in the crowd at Lords. What a waste. Sachin get your pads on and get ready to open against the saffies( no point him playing against poms as that is an easy win for India )! YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU.

The saffies threat is Pace bowling and Steyn. There is only one man who can truly front up to face it and propel India forward, and thats the great Sachin. None others can truly face the 90 mph steyn with the confidence of Sachin, let him play him and smash him out of the attack.

I am sure the authorities will allow him to play, as its SACHIN after all!

He will only need acouple of throw downs as preperation and then will be ready to deliver. Swallow your pride Dhoni, call up the legend NOW!

Dhoni stays confident in come back to home

LONDON: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has said they were under pressure to qualify for the semifinals of the ICC World Twenty20 after they lost their first Group E Super Eight match to the West Indies by seven wickets at Lord’s on Friday. He was, however, confident they would still go through.

“It will bring out the best in us,” he said. “We were under a lot of pressure in the last World Cup when every game was a do-or-die game but we got through to the final and won it."
The West Indies captain Chris Gayle was delighted that Dwayne Bravo and Fidel Edwards, who picked up two early Indian wickets, produce such fine displays.

"It's not all the time that you're going to get off to a flyer," said Gayle ."It didn't happen for me today, but I'm really happy some of our younger players stepped up and it's really good for the team.

"Fidel picked up wickets at the top of the order. The majority of India's players are very good batsmen, but taking key wickets is very important."

Unbroken Bravo

Dwayne Bravo went that extra mile to ensure that the West Indies’ Group E Super Eight match in the ICC World Twenty20 against the defending champions India on Friday would be talked of as his own. He claimed four wickets when his team restricted India to 153 for seven in 20 overs and then came back to make 66 (34 balls, four fours, three sixes) to halt India in their tracks.

On a day when skipper Chris Gayle – who missed a game owing to injury – was not his belligerent self, Bravo took on the role of being the West Indies’ key batsman. Promoted to bat at No. 4 at the fall of the skipper’s wicket in the eighth over, Bravo played his part to perfection, frustrating the Indians with a methodical approach and never showing signs of panic.

It did look like India had bowled themselves back into the game by getting rid of Andre Fletcher and Gayle quite cheaply but Bravo and Lendl Simmons (44, 37 balls, five fours) shared a 58-run stand in quick time before Shivnarine Chanderpaul (18 not out, nine balls) was a privileged witness to Bravo’s batsmanship during the unbroken 56-run stand that sealed the win.

Yuvraj will be Mahendra Singh Dhoni's deputy

LONDON: Indian middle-order mainstay Yuvraj Singh has been named vice-captain of the Indian cricket team in place of injured Virender Sewhag for the ongoing ICC World Twenty20.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement on Friday that Yuvraj will be Mahendra Singh Dhoni's deputy in Sehwag's absence.

"In the absence of Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh has been named as vice captain for the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 in England", BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement.

Yuvraj had been the vice-captain of the one-day team for a brief period in 2007-08.

Sehwag has been replaced by wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik.

Muralitharan spins Sri Lanka to victory

LONDON: Muttiah Muralitharan spit his spinning venom and paralyzed the Pakistani batsmen by luring them to their demise as Sri Lanka registered a 19-run win over Pakistan in the crucial opening Super Eight match of the ICC World Twenty20 here on Friday.

Murali has a unique gift of a wrist and fingers which can put more rotations per second on a cricket ball than any off-spinner has probably ever done. And this came into foray when he dismissed both Misbah and Shahid Afridi in the same over to shift the momentum of the game in his team’s favour.

Misbah played a good shot by pulling Muralitharan crisply but could manage the safe hands of deep midwicket.
Just a ball later the magician showed his experience when he bowled a topspinner to Afridi. The batsman was foxed and could manage just a top-edge to be picked out in deep midwicket again.

Two back-to-back dismissals in the same region- only a magician could have scripted it. The dismissals changed the fortune of Sri Lanka as the Pakistani side could manage just 131 for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted quota of 20 overs.
Muralitharan finished with figures of 4-0-28-2.

The other star bowler for the Lankans was Lasith Malinga who looked at his best as he returned with wicket every time his captain gave him the ball. Malinga finished with impressive figures of 4-0-17-3.

Younis Khan fought and fought hard but running out of partners did him in. The Pakistan captain scored a fighting 50 before top-edging Malinga.

Chasing a modest 150 runs to win the match, Pakistan had early hiccups but the experienced pair of Younis Khan and Misbah ul-Haq came together to stitch a 66-run partnership to bring them back into the game.

Earlier, Sri Lanka opening pair of Sanath Jayasuriya and Tillakaratne Dilshan took the opposition bowlers to the cleaners by sharing an 81-run stand from nine overs before slow bowlers Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal brought Pakistan back into the match.

Sohail Tanvir was wayward in his opening spell of two overs, which ended up with 20 balls being bowled instead of 12.

Sri Lanka were threatening to post a huge total by scoring 86 for one at the half-way mark and 120 for three at the end of the 15th over largely due to the contributions of Jayasuriya (26 off 24 balls) and top scorer Dilshan (46 off 39 balls).

But, once Afridi and Ajmal started bowling in tandem, Sri Lanka found it difficult to find the runs and with the pressure building on they lost wickets in a heap in the death overs.

In fact, Sri Lanka could add just 30 runs from the last five overs while losing four wickets in the process.

For Pakistan, the trio of Afridi, Ajmal and Umar Gul took two wickets apiece conceding 23, 26 and 34 runs respectively.

Virender Sehwag out of T20 World Cup

NOTTINGHAM: One wonders what’s frostier at the moment, the Indian captains relationship with the media or the Nottingham weather.
Virender Sehwag

Blogs: Dhoni's Men in Blue are not in pink of health
Sehwag's exit huge blow to India hopes

After staging a 'unity parade and leading a team walkout at a press conference following TOIs June 5 report of a rift between him and the injured Virender Sehwag, M S Dhoni had another run-in with the media on Tuesday.

Sparks flew between him and journalists as Dhoni refused to confirm or deny Sehwags injury status, even as rumours were doing the rounds that the opener had been asked to return. This led to an altercations between the captain and scribes, with Dhoni, at one point, even furiously asking if the media was accusing him of selectively leaking stories.

Even as the drama was unfolding, a BCCI press release confirmed that a grade-I tear in the shoulder had ruled Sehwag out of the tournament. Dinesh Karthik will be his replacement. Sehwag will return after consulting medical experts in London, added the release.

After TOI carried a report on talk of tension between the captain and his deputy, Dhoni had paraded the team before the media in a show of unity.

On Tuesday, Sehwag batted for just an over-and-a-half at the nets before leaving — a sure pointer that he hadn’t recovered from injury. So when Dhoni arrived at the pre-match media briefing, alone this time, the first question he faced was on Sehwag’s fitness.

His response was a cold, "I don’t want to say anything on fitness issues. BCCI will be issuing a release."

BCCI

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is learnt to have tweaked the IPL 2 format. The board plans to introduce two five-minute ‘strategy breaks’ — essentially ad breaks after every 10 overs, per match, during telecasts. This will add 600 seconds of commercial time per match. This is part of a renegotiation deal with broadcaster Multi Screen Media (MSM, earlier Sony Entertainment).

A BCCI official confirmed the development to ET. “It is true that as part of the new contract inked between the IPL management and MSM, after every 10 overs, there will be a five-minute commercial break,” the official said. With this, MSM will have access to extra air-time of 300 seconds each in both innings per match. So in totality, the broadcaster would get commercial airtime of around 2,600 seconds per match in Season 2, against approximately 2,000 seconds per match in Season 1.

MSM president (network sales) Rohit Gupta declined to comment on the development.

Apart from getting an opportunity to earn incremental revenues
compared to Season 1, MSM will also not be pressurised to increase ad rates to recover costs. As of now, the broadcaster has maintained its ad rates of Rs 3-4 lakh per 10 seconds, to maximise chances of roping in even those advertisers, impacted by the slowdown. Now that there is clarity on the broadcaster, MSM is fast-tracking on closing its sponsorship and advertising deals. It is expected to formalise all sponsorship deals by the weekend.

MSM has shelled out a record $1.63 billion (Rs 8,200 crore) for IPL’s broadcast rights for nine years, and access to extra commercial time would help it in recovering the incremental costs involved in acquiring IPL rights for Season 2. This is much higher than its 10-year deal inked last year, when sports management firm World Sports Group (WSG) had bought the T-20 tournament’s multi-media rights for $918 million for 10 years and had, in turn, sold the rights to MSM for five years.

The MSM-WSG combine had additionally committed an additional promotional spend of $108 million. Last year, MSM had acquired IPL’s India broadcast rights for Rs 220 crore annually for a five-year period. After the deal was scrapped following a legal battle, WSG-Mauritius had bought back the broadcast rights from BCCI for around Rs 335 crore annually — 50% higher than its original deal with MSM.

BCCI is also learnt to have told the MSM management that the number of matches and teams could increase by 2011, which would help the broadcaster hedge its commercial risks over the 9-year period. Interestingly, BCCI had charged MSM with breach of contract on various fronts, one of which was including too many commercial inserts during matches and replays during Season 1.

Meanwhile, with the tournament being shifted back by a week and scheduled to start on April 18 instead of April 10, on air-deals with advertisers are being reworked, media buyers said. “There is a definitely a concern among advertisers because the number of matches on a single day on weekdays will increase significantly. We do expect an impact on ratings,” a leading media buyer said. The 59 matches are scheduled to be played across 36 days, and on average, there is a 20% drop in television ratings between prime time (9 pm) matches and matches played at 4 pm.
