'X factor' Malinga back in supernatural swing

Lasith Malinga is such an integral part of Sri Lanka's fast bowling arsenal that it needed the nation's president to intervene and ensure
he was fit for the World Twenty20s in England.

The bowler with the rare sling-arm action, whose toe-crushing yorkers have tested the world's finest batsmen, sat out the entire 2008 and early 2009 season with a career-threatening knee injury.

Malinga, 25, was unable to run or train, and the swollen bone in his right knee was so painful that he could barely climb stairs.

Worried the prodigious talent could be lost to the game, Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa recommended that Malinga should meet a spiritual healer Eliyantha White.

"He (White) works with supernatural powers and herbs," explained Malinga. "I don't know what he does or how he does it, but it works. I am very grateful to him and the president."

The treatment lasted five days and the pain disappeared. Malinga was fit to start his training. White later reportedly cured veteran Sanath Jayasuriya of a long-standing back problem.

Malinga marked his return to active cricket with a strong showing in the Indian Premier League in South Africa where he grabbed 18 wickets in 13 matches for the Mumbai Indians.

"He is fast and furious and never easy to get away," said an appreciative Mumbai coach Pravin Amre. "Sri Lanka will be very happy he is back."

Now that South Africa has won against WI

India's chances of making to Semi Finals even if they win against England and South Africa hinges on England's chances against West Indies. The loss against West Indies will come back to bite India if WI wins against England. If South Africa ends up with the best NRR even after losing against India they will be placed first obviously. From what I understand if WI and India are tied for points then it is West Indies that will go through because they have beaten India already.

At this point in time India has a NRR of -0.71, the least of all the teams in the group. England is on -0.67, Wst Indies is on -0.15 and South Africa on +0.90

I don't reckon South African can be walloped by a big margin that will pull their NRR massively. Similarly WI is expected to win against England (although WI have had wood over them this summer) by a decent margin. This will mean India will not only have to aim for a victory here but will also need to win with some decent margin otherwise despite winning the next two games they may still not make it to the next round.

149/6 vs NZ
Yuvraj 50(34)

141/9 vs Pakistan
Uthappa 50(39)

Following is the batting of Indians while setting a target. As you can see India largely depends on Gambhir and Yuvraj. Others chip in. But not very consistent. I think it is time to rethink our strategy about setting targets.

SOS to Tendulkar-"get your pads on"

He is there watching in the crowd at Lords. What a waste. Sachin get your pads on and get ready to open against the saffies( no point him playing against poms as that is an easy win for India )! YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU.

The saffies threat is Pace bowling and Steyn. There is only one man who can truly front up to face it and propel India forward, and thats the great Sachin. None others can truly face the 90 mph steyn with the confidence of Sachin, let him play him and smash him out of the attack.

I am sure the authorities will allow him to play, as its SACHIN after all!

He will only need acouple of throw downs as preperation and then will be ready to deliver. Swallow your pride Dhoni, call up the legend NOW!

Dhoni stays confident in come back to home

LONDON: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has said they were under pressure to qualify for the semifinals of the ICC World Twenty20 after they lost their first Group E Super Eight match to the West Indies by seven wickets at Lord’s on Friday. He was, however, confident they would still go through.

“It will bring out the best in us,” he said. “We were under a lot of pressure in the last World Cup when every game was a do-or-die game but we got through to the final and won it."
The West Indies captain Chris Gayle was delighted that Dwayne Bravo and Fidel Edwards, who picked up two early Indian wickets, produce such fine displays.

"It's not all the time that you're going to get off to a flyer," said Gayle ."It didn't happen for me today, but I'm really happy some of our younger players stepped up and it's really good for the team.

"Fidel picked up wickets at the top of the order. The majority of India's players are very good batsmen, but taking key wickets is very important."

Unbroken Bravo

Dwayne Bravo went that extra mile to ensure that the West Indies’ Group E Super Eight match in the ICC World Twenty20 against the defending champions India on Friday would be talked of as his own. He claimed four wickets when his team restricted India to 153 for seven in 20 overs and then came back to make 66 (34 balls, four fours, three sixes) to halt India in their tracks.

On a day when skipper Chris Gayle – who missed a game owing to injury – was not his belligerent self, Bravo took on the role of being the West Indies’ key batsman. Promoted to bat at No. 4 at the fall of the skipper’s wicket in the eighth over, Bravo played his part to perfection, frustrating the Indians with a methodical approach and never showing signs of panic.

It did look like India had bowled themselves back into the game by getting rid of Andre Fletcher and Gayle quite cheaply but Bravo and Lendl Simmons (44, 37 balls, five fours) shared a 58-run stand in quick time before Shivnarine Chanderpaul (18 not out, nine balls) was a privileged witness to Bravo’s batsmanship during the unbroken 56-run stand that sealed the win.

Yuvraj will be Mahendra Singh Dhoni's deputy

LONDON: Indian middle-order mainstay Yuvraj Singh has been named vice-captain of the Indian cricket team in place of injured Virender Sewhag for the ongoing ICC World Twenty20.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement on Friday that Yuvraj will be Mahendra Singh Dhoni's deputy in Sehwag's absence.

"In the absence of Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh has been named as vice captain for the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 in England", BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement.

Yuvraj had been the vice-captain of the one-day team for a brief period in 2007-08.

Sehwag has been replaced by wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik.

Muralitharan spins Sri Lanka to victory

LONDON: Muttiah Muralitharan spit his spinning venom and paralyzed the Pakistani batsmen by luring them to their demise as Sri Lanka registered a 19-run win over Pakistan in the crucial opening Super Eight match of the ICC World Twenty20 here on Friday.

Murali has a unique gift of a wrist and fingers which can put more rotations per second on a cricket ball than any off-spinner has probably ever done. And this came into foray when he dismissed both Misbah and Shahid Afridi in the same over to shift the momentum of the game in his team’s favour.

Misbah played a good shot by pulling Muralitharan crisply but could manage the safe hands of deep midwicket.
Just a ball later the magician showed his experience when he bowled a topspinner to Afridi. The batsman was foxed and could manage just a top-edge to be picked out in deep midwicket again.

Two back-to-back dismissals in the same region- only a magician could have scripted it. The dismissals changed the fortune of Sri Lanka as the Pakistani side could manage just 131 for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted quota of 20 overs.
Muralitharan finished with figures of 4-0-28-2.

The other star bowler for the Lankans was Lasith Malinga who looked at his best as he returned with wicket every time his captain gave him the ball. Malinga finished with impressive figures of 4-0-17-3.

Younis Khan fought and fought hard but running out of partners did him in. The Pakistan captain scored a fighting 50 before top-edging Malinga.

Chasing a modest 150 runs to win the match, Pakistan had early hiccups but the experienced pair of Younis Khan and Misbah ul-Haq came together to stitch a 66-run partnership to bring them back into the game.

Earlier, Sri Lanka opening pair of Sanath Jayasuriya and Tillakaratne Dilshan took the opposition bowlers to the cleaners by sharing an 81-run stand from nine overs before slow bowlers Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal brought Pakistan back into the match.

Sohail Tanvir was wayward in his opening spell of two overs, which ended up with 20 balls being bowled instead of 12.

Sri Lanka were threatening to post a huge total by scoring 86 for one at the half-way mark and 120 for three at the end of the 15th over largely due to the contributions of Jayasuriya (26 off 24 balls) and top scorer Dilshan (46 off 39 balls).

But, once Afridi and Ajmal started bowling in tandem, Sri Lanka found it difficult to find the runs and with the pressure building on they lost wickets in a heap in the death overs.

In fact, Sri Lanka could add just 30 runs from the last five overs while losing four wickets in the process.

For Pakistan, the trio of Afridi, Ajmal and Umar Gul took two wickets apiece conceding 23, 26 and 34 runs respectively.
